Benry and his roster of seasoned guides have access to a number of productive fishing areas known for an abundance of bonefish, permit, tarpon, and sprinkles of various other inshore predators including barracuda, lemon sharks, and more. For starters, the lodge is located on Andros’ fabled west side, with miles and miles of flats teeming with life, including gamefish that see little or no fishing pressure. Numerous freshwater creeks emptying onto the vast shallows of the Great Bahama Bank produce the most reliable tarpon fishing in the region while also serving up the forage coveted by the many bonefish and permit that inhabit the area. Trailering the boat 20 to 30 minutes puts anglers within easy reach of other hotspots like Mastic Bay and the famous Joulter Cays, where anglers will marvel at the scenery and the bonefish, permit, and other exciting targets patrolling the pristine flats.
Some of the fishing areas hold big schools of 3- to 5-pound bones while others are home to large specimens, some reaching double-digit weights, that prefer to cruise in singles, pairs, or small pods. While much of the fishing in the region entails stalking fish from a skiff propelled by the guide with a push pole, wading is a possibility in certain spots. The bottom of many flats consists of sand, coral, limestone, or a combination of any of the above, and are firm enough to wade. Proper wading footwear is highly recommended to ensure good footing and protection against sharp coral and jagged rocks.
Fishing Schedule,
Unless you prefer otherwise, guides at Red Bay Sunset Lodge base fishing hours on the tides to ensure the best possible results. Depending on the time of year, tides, and conditions, you may board your boat at the dock in front of the lodge or take a drive to a boat ramp closer to the fishing grounds. That could mean heading out as early as 6:00 a.m. But don’t worry; you won’t have to start your day without coffee and breakfast.
Boats
Red Bay Sunset Lodge guides are equipped with modern, well-maintained flats skiffs from renowned brands like Action Craft, Hewes, Maverick, and Dolphin designed to reach the fishing grounds quickly and comfortably, provide a stable fishing platform, and quietly sneak up on fish in skinny water.
Loaner Gear
While the lodge tries to keep a selection of fly outfits to lend guests in the event their gear is misplaced or damaged during the trip, its remote location can make fixing or replacing tackle difficult, so it’s best to bring at least one spare rod and reel, as well as plenty of flies, leaders, and other essentials. You should also bring your own rain jacket, flats wading footwear, and polarized sunglasses.
