Andros South Lodge

Why We Like It

Situated near Deep Creek in largely undeveloped South Andros, this cozy lodge offers quick and easy access to some of the best flats and biggest bonefish, even by Bahamian standards.

Andros South offers clean, air-conditioned accommodations a few yards from a white-sand beach, and every guest gets his or her own room. Key features include a comfortable dining room and outdoor gathering areas, as well as a beach tiki bar and a nifty fly casting practice range with conch shells serving as distance markers.

The location and lodge’s fleet of modern Hell’s Bay flats skiffs enable the veteran guide staff to put anglers in front of fish at a variety of renowned fishing hotspots. A short run from the dock are productive oceanside flats along Andros’ eastern shores, several cays off the south end of the island, as well as Deep Creek, Little Creek, Grassy Creek, and other tidal creeks with miles and miles of interior flats, protected coves, shallow ponds, and channels. Anglers will find plenty of bonefish and an exciting supporting cast that includes permit, tarpon, barracuda, lemon sharks, and more.

The Andros South Lodge Experience

Though not not exactly lavish, Andros South is a very comfortable oceanfront lodge with well-maintained grounds filled with coconut palms and a variety of other native plants. It has eight single rooms, all air-conditioned and with full baths, plus a large dining room. There’s a dedicated area for fly casting practice. Slack Tide, the lodge’s beach tiki bar, is the ideal spot to enjoy appetizers with a view and cool off after fishing with a cold beer or cocktail.

Andros South has a deep roster of superb local guides, some of whom have been fishing the area for more than 20 years. They have at their disposal a wide range of hotspots where anglers can connect with bones and other coveted species. There’s the open, oceanside flats along Andros’ eastern shores, plus Deep Creek, Little Creek, Grassy Creek, and other major tidal creeks with miles and miles of flats, coves, and a network of finger channels and interconnected ponds where anglers will find plenty of fish and the desired protection during periods of strong winds. There’s also a series of small cays surrounded by expansive white-sand flats off Andros’ southern tip, plus the vast shallows on the west side of the island, many of which also offer wadable sandy bottoms.

Bonefish in the 2- to 5-pound range abound in the area, 6 to 8 pounders are common, and specimens of 10 pounds or more are often present in singles, pairs, and trios. Occasional shots at permit, tarpon, barracuda, lemon sharks, and other inshore game are also likely.

While much of the fishing in the area entails stalking fish from a skiff propelled by a guide with a push pole, wading is a possibility in certain spots. The bottom of many flats consists of sand, coral, limestone, or a combination of any of the above and are firm enough to wade. Proper wading footwear, however, is highly recommended to ensure good footing and protection against sharp coral and jagged bottom structure.

Fishing Schedule
Anglers meet their guides and board the boats before 8:00 a.m. for a full day of fishing, which ends at around 4:00 p.m.

Boats
Andros South keeps a fleet of new 18-foot Hell’s Bay flats skiffs to reach the fishing grounds quickly and comfortably, provide a stable fishing platform, and quietly stalk fish in skinny water.

Loaner Gear
While the lodge tries to keep a few fly outfits to lend guests in the event their gear is misplaced or damaged during the trip, the remote location makes it difficult to fix or replace tackle. It’s best to bring at least one spare rod and reel as well as plenty of flies, leaders, and other essentials. You should also bring your own rain jacket, flats wading footwear, and quality polarized sunglasses.

Andros South is a brightly painted oceanfront lodge surrounded by palm trees and offering eight single, air-conditioned rooms with full baths. They’re all located next to the main building, which houses a large comfortable dining room. Outdoor gathering spots include a beach tiki bar that’s ideal for mingling with fellow guests and enjoying the view, appetizers, and complimentary beer and cocktails.

Cuisine
At Andros South you’ll enjoy a variety of Bahamian specialties. Seafood, including fresh snapper and grouper to lobster and conch, is a staple, but jerk chicken, ribs, and many other great dishes regularly grace the menu. The lodge is also happy to take special requests, be it for special dietary requirements or personal preference. The main courses are always complemented by hearty side dishes and topped off with sinful desserts like homemade key lime pie. By the way, all beer, wine, and liquor are included.

Connectivity
Cell service on South Andros Island is spotty, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected. The lodge has a landline phone and also provides free Wi-Fi.

The beach in front of Andros South Lodge is perfect for swimming, but Andros South doesn’t really offer much else in the way of non-angling activities. It’s all about those bonefish.

Despite being the largest landmass in the Bahamas, the Andros Islands are mostly undeveloped and lack big airports where large jets can land. In addition, the island is divided into three sections with water in between. Anglers headed to Andros South Lodge must fly into Congo Town, the largest town on the southern island.

Depending on where your trip originates and your preferred travel dates and times, you may have to fly to Nassau, overnight there, and catch a Western Air flight (242-377-2222, westernairbahamas.com) to South Andros the next morning. However, Makers Air (954-771-0330, makersiar.com) offers direct daily flights from Fort Lauderdale. Midcurrent can also suggest some charter flight options from South Florida. Once you reach Congo Town, a representative of Andros South will meet you at the airport and drive you to the lodge, about 25 minutes away.

Midcurrent’s services are completely free, so you never pay more than if you booked directly with the lodge or outfitter. All rates are per person and listed in U.S. dollars.
