Bair’s Lodge

Why We Like It

If you’re looking for world-class bonefishing in a pristine setting, along with deluxe, all-inclusive lodging, Bair’s is hard to beat. The lodge is located on the mostly undeveloped South Andros Island between a pair of major coastal creeks, so anglers have plenty of productive water to fish, even on windy days, plus comfortable passage to the island’s fabled west side. A long, shallow sandbar that parallels the shore keeps the surf calm and enables anglers to board boats at the beach, right in front of the lodge.

Accommodations are roomy and elegantly furnished, and both the service and food are excellent. Anglers are welcomed back from fishing with a chilled towel and a cocktail, shortly followed by appetizers. Welcoming areas both inside and outdoors are perfect for relaxing and exchanging fish tales with other anglers, and a complimentary self-serve bar ensures guest can enjoy their favorite libations anytime.

The Bair’s Lodge Experience

Bair’s is a beachfront lodge offering spacious, well-appointed, air-conditioned rooms with large, private baths. The comfortable living room, covered veranda and additional outdoor seating are ideal gathering spots to mingle with fellow guests and enjoy cocktails, appetizers, and the ocean view. The food is superb, and the complimentary self-serve bar remains open 24/7.

Bair’s Lodge guides know the fastest routes to a wealth of amazing areas known to harbor bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Right in front of the lodge begins the famous flats along the island’s eastern shore, and the mouths of many productive tidal creeks are not far off. Any one of these waterways can wind you deep into intimate lagoons and ponds hidden from any wind that may occur. Further south lie a collection of small cayes punctuating the white sand flats off the tip of the island, leading on to the labyrinthine flats of the remote western shore. The shallow shoals and light bottoms provide utterly stellar wading opportunities when the conditions are right.

Some of the areas hold big schools of 2- to 5-pound bonefish while others are home to large specimens, some reaching double-digit weights, that prefer to cruise in singles, pairs, and trios. Occasional shots at permit, tarpon, barracuda, and other inshore game are also likely.

While much of the fishing in the area entails stalking fish from a push-poled skiff, wading is a great option in many areas. The bottom of many flats consists of sand, coral, limestone, or a combination of any of the above, and are firm enough to wade. Good wading shoes or boots are highly recommended to ensure good footing and protection against sharp coral and jagged bottom structure.

Fishing Schedule
Anglers meet their guides and board the boats at the beach, just a few steps from the lodge, before 8:00 a.m. for a full day of fishing, which generally ends around 4:00 p.m.

Boats
Bair’s has a fleet of modern 17-foot Maverick Mirage HPX-V flats skiffs designed to run and float shallow, cruise smoothly on a moderate chop, stealthily stalk fish in skinny water, and provide a roomy and stable platform from which to fly fish.

Loaner Gear
The lodge has a selection of fly outfits from top brands and rigged especially for fishing the flats of south Andros to lend guests in the event their gear is misplaced or damaged during the trip. In addition, Bair’s has a small shop that sells flies, leaders, and other essentials. You should, however, bring your own rain jacket, flats wading footwear, and polarized sunglasses.

Bair’s is a bright and airy beachfront lodge surrounded by palm trees and offering deluxe accommodations. All rooms are air-conditioned, spacious and well-appointed, and they feature terracotta tile floors, two full-size beds with white cotton sheets, tropical-weight duvets and down pillows, plus private full baths. The large, comfortable living room with satellite TV (for those who wouldn’t want to miss a big game), covered veranda and additional outdoor seating are ideal gathering spots to mingle with fellow guests and enjoy cocktails, appetizers, and the ocean view. The food is superb, and the complimentary, self-serve bar is well stocked and remains open all the time. Strategically-placed racks let anglers keep their fly rods outside where they get rinsed daily by lodge staff and can be safely be transported to the boats every morning. A fire pit with Adirondack chairs allows guests enjoy a glass of wine, cocktail, or cigar at the water’s edge during cool fall and winter evenings.

Cuisine
At Bair’s Lodge, anglers start the day with a hearty breakfast. Kitchen staff pack lunches into a boat cooler before groups go out on the water. Refreshing cocktails and appetizers are served on the veranda upon anglers’ return from fishing. For dinner, Chef Valentino Adderley delights guests with a variety of international dishes and refined versions of Bahamian specialties. Local seafood including mahi, tuna, snapper, grouper, lobster, and conch are frequently on the menu alongside fresh vegetables and fruits, pastas, chicken, pork, and other meats.

The main courses are always accompanied by delicious side dishes and topped off with amazing desserts ranging from cheesecake to key lime parfaits and homemade ice cream. Wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, Argentina, and other renowned wine regions are served with dinner.

For every meal guests get to pick from two or more choices, and Valentino and his staff are also happy to accommodate special requests, be it for dietary requirements or just personal preference. The self-serve bar is always open, equipped with a blender for mixing cocktails and kept stocked with cold beers, spirits, mixers, soft drinks, and ice.

Connectivity
Cell service in South Andros is spotty, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected. The lodge has a phone and also provides free Wi-Fi, plus there’s a satellite phone for emergencies.

The lodge has several kayaks that guests are free to use and the beach in front is great for swimming, but Bair’s doesn’t really offer other non-angling activities. Fishing is the focus here.

The Andros Islands are the biggest block of land in the Bahamas but hold only a fraction of its population. Anglers traveling from the United States and elsewhere typically fly in to Nassau first and then catch a smaller plane to Congo Town on South Andros Island.

Depending on where your trip originates and your preferred travel dates and times, you may have to fly to Nassau, overnight there and catch a Western Air flight (242-377-2222, westernairbahamas.com) to South Andros the next morning. However, Makers Air (954-771-0330, makersiar.com) offers direct daily flights from Fort Lauderdale to Congo Town. Midcurrent can also suggest some charter flight options from South Florida. Once you reach Congo Town, a representative of Bair’s will meet you at the airport and drive you to the lodge about 25 minutes away.

Midcurrent’s services are completely free, so you never pay more than if you booked directly with the lodge or outfitter. All rates are per person and listed in U.S. dollars.
